On March 10, 2016 a New York City taxi cab jumped a curb and slammed into a building after driving at a high rate of speed. According to CBS New York, the taxi cab ran a red light at the intersection of First Avenue and 33rd Street at about 8:45 a.m. The taxi driver hit and injured two pedestrians, as well as suffering injuries himself. Witnesses say that there were many more people in the area that narrowly escaped being hit, especially since the incident occurred during rush hour.
In Manhattan and the five boroughs, public transportation is easily accessible and convenient. In fact, according to StatsBee, only about 23 percent of households own a car in Manhattan, and between 44 to 64 percent of households own a car in the other boroughs. Although there are more individuals who own a car in the boroughs, the percentage is still low as compared to the high 92 percent of households which own a car in America as a whole.
