Three construction workers were injured on a construction site in mid-June after a platform inside an elevator shaft collapsed, according to a report by WABC. The three workers were subsequently taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. An investigation is ongoing, and potential enforcement action is pending.
The accident occurred around 8:00 AM on Monday, June 15, when three construction workers were working on a platform that suddenly gave way. The building where the work was being performed is currently under construction and located on Tillary Street in Brooklyn. All three then fell to the bottom of the shaft, sustaining non-life-threatening injuries. They were then taken to Methodist Hospital for treatment. The Department of Buildings is now investigating to determine what enforcement actions, if any, should be taken against the construction company, the building site owner, or both.
Sadly, accidents on construction sites are an increasingly common problem in New York City. Construction remains the most dangerous profession in the city, at least when it comes to on-the-job accidents. Although construction was stalled for a few months due to the coronavirus pandemic, construction sites around New York City are up and running again, and many construction companies and site owners are eager to make up for lost time. This may result in a more cavalier attitude towards safety regulations, resulting in greater danger to construction workers and more accidents.
