Hurricane Season Is Here

Recently, Hurricanes Harvey and Irma made landfall in the United States causing panic, chaos, damage and death. It is important to know that when any storm occurs, the weather makes it difficult to navigate the roadways.  In addition, the high volume of drivers on the roads enhances the possibility of an accident occurring. Here are tips to decrease the risk of having an automobile accident during a storm:

  • Headlights are a must. Today, most cars are equipped with automatic headlights. It is important to remember that if your windshield wipers are on, your headlights should also be on because it makes your vehicle more visible to others on the road.
  • Give yourself time. If there is inclement weather, allow yourself more time for travel, especially during rush hour. By leaving earlier than usual, you can drive slower and more cautiously. Decreasing your speed in poor weather conditions will reduce the risk of an accident and help ensure that you arrive safely at your destination.
  • Do not use cruise control. Cruise control provides an individual the ability to remove his or her feet from the gas and brake pedals. When a driver is too comfortable behind the wheel, he or she may have slower reaction time. This may lead to an accident, especially during a storm.
  • Be observant of trucks. Be aware of trucks and larger vehicles in bad weather. Large vehicles tend to be unpredictable and have many blind spots. For instance, a large vehicle may topple over due to strong winds. It is important to give large trucks additional space on the road.

Before driving in inclement weather conditions, it is important to inspect your vehicle to make sure that all safety features are working, specifically blinkers, headlights, and windshield wipers. It is extremely dangerous to be driving in bad weather without adequate safety features, which is why it is imperative that you maintain your vehicle regularly.
