Bill Will Allow NYC Cyclists To Pass Through LPI Intersections

Earlier this year, New York City Councilman Carlos Menchaca introduced a bill that would allow cyclists to ride through certain red lights. Currently, cyclists and cars are treated the same way under the law. The bill would allow for cyclists to ride through red lights with Lead Pedestrian Intervals (LPIs), which extend the duration of a red light to give pedestrians additional time to cross the street before traffic begins to move. According to the Department of Transportation (DOT), there are almost 1,500 intersections throughout New York City that have LPIs.

Bill Passed to Make New York City Streets Safer for Bikers and Pedestrians

Beginning December 27, 2016 the streets of New York City will be safer for individuals walking and biking. The new local law labeled Intro 997-A protects pedestrians who enter a crosswalk during the flashing “Pedestrian Change Interval” to have the right of way. Currently, Section 4-03 of the Rules of the City of New York states that no pedestrian should enter or cross the roadway during the time the change interval is flashing.
